Hello All!
I'm Gabey's mum, Sarah Carson and we are backyard urban farmers. I have always loved gardening, creating, teaching, and business! I believe it is important to teach our children that there is value in everything that they do and that every ounce of hard work will pay off. That is how we have come to start this business and website. Because Gabey really wanted something, was willing to work for it through learning, dedication, and a lot of her free time, and now we are teaching and sharing our opportunities with others- why waste all that hard work, right!
Why Azolla?
As part of Gabey's Smart Chicks business model we have had to address her expenses vs. profits. When we first began, there was a lot of expense related to start up, but as we progressed we had to become smarter about our supplies, quality of products, quantity of goods, and potential by-products, that we had not previously thought of, in order to help Gabey meet the goals that she had made for herself. Part of this effort has been learning what additional bonuses backyard chickens can have. It's led us to seek out quality breeders to start with good stock, showing our birds to become a part of a larger community, starting an egg co-op to meet the demand for organic eggs, and composting to feed plants with higher dollar values. This next spring will see the growth of azolla for an increased nutritional diet and a sustainable, inexpensive food source for our chickens and their chicks! Scientifically- we will be conducting this experiment to see if this added level of nutrition will increase our hatching rates and improve chick health as compared to breed averages.
Stay tuned to this page as I set up my Azolla container garden. If you are interested in planting along, I will be selling an Azolla Starter Kit and would love to include you in this learning endeavor! The waiting list is currently open and I will begin selling the GSC Azolla Starter Kit March 2013.
