Olive Eggers
(Cross breed between Black Copper Marans & W/BW Ameraucanas)
While we love to offer a variety of pure bred birds, our Olive Egger crossbreeds are some of our most popular chicks, bred from our original science study on genetic traits and how to pass on hereditary traits- such as egg color. Interestingly Ameraucanas are only 1 of 2 blue egg laying breeds of poultry. Genetically the color pigment of their egg is changed through & through, meaning the calcium color is affected just before the egg is fully formed and laid. The tone variation is attributed to the rooster's genes. If you want to work toward a dark, brighter, or even prettier blue, you must keep track of the color egg your rooster was hatched from as he will pass this on to his chicks.
Different from the Ameraucana are the Black Copper Marans who lay the darkest, chocolate colored eggs of all poultry. However, instead of changing the color pigment of the shell, Maran eggs are white & then go through a final "painting" process before being laid. This leaves the chocolate color on the egg wet after it is laid.
When these two breeds are cross bred, the combined genetics create a new generation of gals that will lay olive green eggs with blue pigmentation on the inside of the shell. And the roos? Well they are much hardier in shape and can pass on their genes depending on their future.

Barnevelders
Original Barnevelders have dark, rich red and black partridge double- laced feathers and were brought over from Holland about 100 years ago. While Barnies are a Dutch heritage breed, the US standards are still being defined due to their rarity. Our chicks comes from two of the founding breeders who saw the breed entered into the APA's Standard of Perfection in 1991, Erhardt Weihs and Royce Van Blaricome. As a Continental breed they have been bred as hardy, dual purpose, quality, large brown egg layers, who make great mums. They are a docile, kind-hearted breed with roosters doing well with multiples in a flock and even lending a hand in the raising of their chicks. You can help bring this breeds' popularity back to life by enjoying them in your coop this fall!
We are actively working on bringing this breed to our area.
Check in Fall of 2015 for availability.

Ducks-Egg Layers
Welsh Harlequin
The Welsh Harlequin is an excellent dual purpose duck laying between 240-330 protein rich eggs (fantastic for desserts & baked goods) per year & producing 4.5-5 lbs. of excellent meat, should you prefer duck to chicken. While on the Livestock Conservancy Critical list, this duck is well known for its calm, docile, and interactive disposition and is a heritage breed that we would like to help increase awareness of. We have not yet raised ducks and have decided to start with just a few of this breed as they are a great "beginner" duck that can be raised with chickens. They even eat the same food! If you are interested in combining an order with us, we are planning to pick out own ducklings June 18-19th.
We will be selling fresh duck eggs and meat in Spring of 2015.
Reservations can be place in November 2014.

- Females will lay without a male present.
- The ratio for males (drakes) to females is 1:5, if desired.
- All ducks quack, however they are a calm breed that "talk" when there is something to say.
- Water is a recreational activity for them & a pond is not required. However, an occasional kiddie pool of fun will go a long way in terms of entertainment!
- They are good foragers, (this may include your vegetables and low lying greens).
- They do not fly, but should be housed in an enclosed pen to keep safe from predators like hawks.
- Compared to the Khaki Campbell, they are a smaller & calmer breed that lays about 10-20 less eggs/ year & their meat dresses out better.
- They are an accepted breed in the American Poultry Association and can be shown.
- We are getting our ducklings from experienced breeders who are actively working to preserve this breed as a utility bird. While their breeding parents are chosen carefully to preserve the breeds traits, they do not show at poultry shows.
