While we do not wish to offend, it is a time honored truth that dinner is a delicious way to get rid of roosters. And while everyone is not cut out for this perspective, we do have a group of homesteading families that grow, produce, and enjoy the fruits & animals of their labor. We would like to offer some of our local area's most common solutions to that crazy rooster question, "where, oh, where, should my little rooster go?"
Resale Options:
Livestock Auction Yards, like the one in Escalon & Modesto have certain days that you can bring livestock in to sale. They will take your information, tag your animal, and post them in the same day auction for an approx. 30% fee. When your animal is sold, a check is mailed to you minus the auctions fees. Most roosters sell for about $5-$10.
Craigslist is free to post an add. Most rooster sell for $4-$25 depending on age, health, and breed. Show Quality breeds sell for much more, especially at poultry shows where they can be best appreciated.
Poultry Shows will sometimes have a sales area with a $10 cage fee. This can be a great option if you have an APA-ABA standard breed that conforms to show quality details. Stockton, CA has their show at the end of January and Modesto's Youth show is mid-March. However, lone roosters sell much better with a paired breeding hen.
Dinner Options:
Rooster Recyclers from the Modesto Area Home Growin' Natural Food, Family Co-Operative are willing to take dual purpose breed roosters that are 10+weeks to 1 year old. Acceptance of roosters is dependent on quality of care as these birds will be eaten by families concerned about healthy food sources.
Feed stores, like JS West in Modesto, CA, will sometimes be able to take roosters and resale them. They don't usually pay you for them, they simple take them off your hands and resale them to others, no questions asked.
The Rabbit Barn in Turlock processes poultry on certain days of the month. You can contact them and make arrangements to drop off & pick up on the same day. The processing fee is $3-$5.
And of course, it is free to process & crock pot your own roos- maybe ask around for any hunter friends who are willing to share a meal in exchange for a little help. Dual purpose roos can be processed as young as 14-16 weeks depending on the breed. And heritage breeds can be enjoyed for their, now, very rarely tasted uniqueness.
We sincerely hope that this has helped you with a difficult quandary or decision. Have a wonderful day.
